IT Training: What do they really need?

A group of people working in an office

Finding IT training that meets your unique needs can be tough. You might not understand the technical needs of your teams, which makes it hard to explain what training they need to a provider.

This is a common challenge for L&D managers, so what questions should you ask your teams, and which should you avoid?

Questions to AVOID or re-think:

  • Are you at an introduction, intermediate or advanced level? Experience level is all relative so unless someone is totally new to the software, the answer might not be particularly useful.
  • What FEATURES do you need to do your job better? Remember we don’t know what we don’t know, and it might just result in an “I don’t know” answer or the suggestion of a feature that might not the only or best tool to learn about.
  • What do you want the training to cover? This could be a useful question in some instances, but it’s one to re-think based on the questions below.

BETTER question to ask you teams:

  • What would you like your spreadsheets/documents/presentations to look like as a result of this training?
  • On what tasks do you spend more time than you think you should?
  • Do you spend a lot of time looking for help on YouTube, Google or are you having to ask colleagues for help? If so, what kind of help are you looking for?
  • What can you currently do successfully with the software?
  • What RESULTS do you think the software can produce that will be beneficial to you and your team?

If you have asked the above questions but are still unclear on what the EXACT objectives are for the training, don’t worry!

At Glide Training we are very experienced in doing discovery work with our customers. Quite quickly, we will have a bespoke solution for your teams that will deliver real value to your organisation. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
